Poll, Pro Bowl, etc..
Written by Andy Furman
Thursday, 31 December 2009 00:00

1) It being December 31st, we ask YOU what YOU would do with the coaching staff of the NY Giants.  See the POLL on the upper left and vote.

2) The Pro Bowl selections were released on Tuesday.  Speaking for myself, others may or may not agree with me but I find these contests somewhat misleading.

  • They can be a lagging indicators of success in prior years.
  • They can be rife with mistakes.
  • They have fans like us, most of whom do not know the entire league well enough, vote.  That is 1/3rd of the makeup of this!  Heck, 90% of fans could not even tell you the starting linemen on their favorite team, let alone the quality of LBers on another team.  So when the balloting amongst players/coaches is close, the last 1/3rd of the vote can swing it wildly depending on the popular perception.
  • They do not incorporate the specific ROLE a player has on his squad, ie the kind of offense or defense he is playing in.  As an example, an offensive player on a team that shares touches more may end up with less stats because of the mouths they have to feed.
  • A guy playing through an injury with 95% of the production will not get noticed, even though his efforts was perhaps significantly larger than a year ago when they voted him the Pro Bowl.
  • Weather for a player in a dome or San Diego vs that of a player in the Northeast

So with all of this qualified, the Giants' lone selection was Shaun O'Hara.  You could easily make an argument for Steve Smith.  Kevin Boss will probably never have an opportunity to become a Pro Bowler as long as Gilbride is his coordinator.  Tuck suffered through an injury.  Webster's play fell off in the latter part of the season.

3) One person we know who has extensive knowledge of the entire league, Wonder, shared some of his views of the Pro Bowl selections:

"It's all a big fat joke..for Faneca....alias- the human turnstile at pass-blocking to be in pro bowl is a joke..whereas David Harris is UNEQUIVOCALLY the BEST ILB in the AFC...wouldn't trade him for ANYONE...certainly not an over the hill Ray Lewis who is not at 100 percent all the time..we all get old, right ??...and STINCHCOMB ??? are you browning kidding ??? mediocre at best..at least they kept Debrickapussy off... but Ray Rice over THOMAS JONES ?? the TOUGHEST runner inside/outside in the league and does NOT fumble... the list goes on and on....NO TONY GONZALEZ ??? must be  a misprint !!!"

4) Did you notice how they moved ("flexed") the Jets game from 1PM to 830PM on Sunday night?  As in Sunday night January 3rd?  There is no problem with football being played in winter.  How about winter at 1PM. How about more than 6 days' notice?  How about ticket holders, PSL HOLDERS, people who have to pay a premium for these events... how about if they can treat these people with a little more respect?!  Like not moving their game 7 1/2 hours.  Like playing in daylight, when temps are 10-15 degrees higher?  Do you think the money these fans make grows on trees?  You are asking these people to go to work the next morning on significantly less sleep.  Odds are the game won't end until ~midnight, they won't be out of the parking lot until 12:30AM, home by 1:30PM, maybe 2AM considering many of these people are still from Long Island, asleep at 2-230AM and awake by 6-630AM for work.  Very nice.  Flex that

5) Preview for Sunday's Vikes game?
  • Minnesota has lost 3 of the last four after going 10-1 out of the gate, so they are 11-4 and tied with the Eagles.  They need the win.
  • Simms noted last weekend that it is not Favre who is tiring, it is the WRs.
  • It is one game, but you do want to give it your all and improve the level of play.  Normally, we are talking about 1 or 2 spots in the draft- that will not make or break your draft. As Accorsi did in going up one spot for Shockey, trade up the one spot and do not get obsessed with the draft order.  The Mayor fully notes 12 teams at 8-7 or 7-8.  So there is a chance of swing ranging from picking at 11 to 22 (two teams from this group will go to the playoffs).  For the Giants, who cannot make it to the playoffs, it means a difference of picking anywhere from 11 to 20.  The Giants opponents' records are a total of 130-110, so we will be losing a lot of tiebreakers. What this means is that (w/o going through the opponents records of the other 11 teams) the Giants are probably looking at something between ~15-17 if they lose and 19-20 if they win, roughly speaking.
5a) The Week 16 loss, the 4 losses in which the team allowed 40 points, these things are not going away, so the need for change is not going to get glossed over by a win over the Redskins (in which Campbell considered that some players may have quit on the team) or Vikings.  To be fair, the Giants had to answer many questions a week later

6) The Osi debate continues.  He talks too much for his own good.
7) This is one of the reasons why we blog.  To inform.  We said this in July, Garafolo said this (about Reese) in December.

You guys come up with some interesting statistics but there is more to the game than simply that. I want to begin by addressing Osi. I totally disagree with Ansy that he talks to much. Oh.here's a stat Andy. Playing maybe 1/2 the snaps this year he STILL LEADS the Giants with 7 sacks. That's right,he has more than Tuck, more than Canty, more than anyone on the Giants.Seven sacks for Osi is below par but how many would he get with a head coach who is "lost" as in" I don't know what I;ve got" I don't know how they are going to play and a defensive coordinator who simply doesn't know how to use his personnel, has no relationship(chemistry) with his players and is either/both not ready for this job or not qualified. It's not like the Giants didn't know who they were promotung. He was the Linebackers coach under "Spags" I totally disagree with Andy's comment that Osi"talks to much" I don't know what yopu are smoking or what you have been watching but this waqs the first year that he did anything out of line and that was to walk out of a practice in camp and make a comment after the Carolina game. He played 5 plays in a route and any PRO BOWL defensive end is NOT going to be happy with the way he was treated. This guy has been a Giant for 7 years and he was a major component of the super bowl team. He did it on thr field unlike Plax,Shockey,Barber,Strahan and others who openly spoke against Coughlin. So,Osi is a big mouth but not the others. It is trendy to dislike Osi right now. I am disappointed that Andy and several others want to bury him. I believe you are scape goating, somethibg I have no respect for. Today Osi gave a brief interview with the A.P. and said he really wants to stay with Blue. He said he loves the organization, loves his team mates and that this is his home. He also said that three things would have to change. You Osi experts can ponder what he meant. Yes, I said Osi got 5 sacks in one game against the EAGLES IN 2007.IN FACT IT WAS 6. Thagts right a giant team record for one game and more than Mr. Strahan who you seem to think walks on water. So,you have a pro-bowl defensive end,a proven sack master.a player who never complained until Sheridan chose to ignore gis skills, reduce him to a sub and humiliate him in public. They sure know how to lidt the spirits of a proven star. Why the hell do you think schemes are so important? It's because that is how you maximum use of your best players gifts.Hey Andy,as you dis Osi and all he has done for this team did you consider how he was treated?,how theymade it so he couldn't use his skills and how No one in the orgamization dtood up for him? I know right now 1/2 dozen teams that want him a lot. That is a fact. Oh,least I forget, how come you aren't dissing Tuck and Webster and Pierce and the others who spoke out on the defense and Sheridan? Strange!
It was announced troday that Canty is now injured with a bad knee and probably won't plsy. He came to N.Y. never having missed a game due to injury. Anyone wonder why he can't play 5 minutes without getting injured every game? Why was Jerry Rice smiling as he packed his bags.
Next,it was announced that Brandon Jacobs won't play Sunday due to an injured knee. Well,as I have said numerous times,Jacobs will havfe a short career as he runs upright and takes a lot of big hits. Yes,it's very mscho but those hits add up when you take them straight on with no bend to your body. Jacobs will finish the year with 3.7 yards per carry and zero 100 yard games. He was hurt a lot and it was rare ro see him make it through a game without limping or hsving to lesve the field several times. He simply won't last and will continue to slide if he can't change the way he runs. No big secret here. It's just simple physics. When big people are hitting you directly on every play and your kmees and legs are totally exposed you get very hurt. My predicition is tha Jacobs at some point in the next year or two will take one too many and his career will end.
Last, guess who came out to speak up for John Fox today. It was several of his players and arguably coach of the year Sean Peyton who knows Kohn very well and admires him as a coach. The Panthers gave him and the G.M a one year extension. Peyton said that if Fox wants to walk he will have a head coaching job within a week. How soon they forget that last year he was 12-4 snd lost to the Cards who pretty damn near won it all. He got hit harder than anyone with injuries and his team is finishing like champs.
Those are the facts gentleman as reported by the A.P. and me. I always thought that a "true" Giant fam stands up for the players and coaches who have given it all. Osi has done that for seven years and Fox is the guy who should have been made head coach instead of Coughlin. I know, you disagree well,I could care less.Peyton and Fox came up as Giants and coached on some great teams. We took Fassel and Coughlin. What a joke!!!

Andy,

Excellent post.

Love your poll. MSM or LSM (Lame Stream Media) does not get it about Coughlin. Coughlin is the problem. Saw your comment this am from another post. You nailed it. Outstanding head coaches ie Walsh, Belichick, and Parcells would not have allowed ongoing problems to fester. Coughlin is a good coach not a great one. I would lump him with Brian Billick.

Life is about making choices. Look at Coughlin's choices for OC and DC. Hufnagel and Lewis were his first selections. As of today, Hufnagel is out of the NFL and Lewis is coaching in Seattle as a secondary coach. Sheridan is a bust. And Gilbride looks like the "best" of the bunch. Spags was his best choice and the Giants let him leave. Except for Spags, none of these coordintors are head coaching timber.

From Coughlin's first presser as Giants coach, The first thing I am going to do is to try and provide the New York Giants with the best staff in football. Best staff???

If the Giants get blown out on Sunday, this will be the flashpoint. He has to go.

Yes, Osi talks too much. Where was he on Monday? He needs to focus on his performance. Stop talking and start tackling.

With Jacobs having surgery, running back is now a position of need. How will Jacobs play next year? Bradshaw can be a number one back; however, he has been banged up this year. Couglin has soured on Ware. And how will Andre Brown look? He is coming off a serious injury. Without question, Brown's injury hurt us. Reese on Brown:

(Ahmad) Bradshaw's definitely our No. 2 right now. But the other two guys are nipping at his heels. We want to make guys earn their jobs. That's a heated position battle right there. Andre Brown is everything we thought he would be. He reminded us of Derrick Ward and we were giddy when he was there in the fourth.

Finally, Boley is a pea brain. If he had something between the ears, he would have kept his mouth shut. On Sunday, his job is on the line. If he plays like crap, Reese should dump him. A 25 million dollar waste product.

Some thoughts about our coaching staff.
written by BigDaddy, December 31, 2009
I have been reading this blog and I just have to say this is a pretty cool place. You guys here tell it like it is, or how you see it which is usually correct or close enough. Here goes;

Look at the Coughlin History; Poor choices for coaches, did not end string of injuries, all but one season we lost the first game of the playoffs, every season we collapse at the end. Made to fire his coordinators or lose his job. Hired Killdrive, Spags was a Reese hire and was the common denominator in the winning of the Super Bowl.

Killdrive was the reason we lost to the Eagles in the playoffs last year. TC = Marty Schottenhiemer, same type of coach and same type of record, Spags made the difference and now it's clear that he did. It's time to get a coaching staff that is cutting edge and not living in the 1990's. Sheridon't is a perfect example of a Coughlin type of hire. Sheridan lied and went back to the Tim Lewis defense, we are a M2M defense not a zone and he went into this complex zone that did not work before. We saw the same confusion and poor play we did with Lewis. We also saw the same player revolt.

In my opinion one reason we have collapses at the end of the season is because Coughlin refuses to work his young players in from the beginning of the season. Lets take the middle linebacker position for instance. We knew Blackburn was not the answer and could only fill in for short periods of time. The heir apparent was Goff. So why didn't Goff get any snaps from the preseason on? He was actually forced to take over because of the injury to AP and ineffectiveness of Chase and he was not prepared? Please answer that one TC....had he started to work him in from jump street we would have either found a middle linebacker or very quickly found we needed one. This has been the issue with Coughlin on many positions. There are going to be injuries and when there is we always have to scramble for players because our backups are NOT prepared or not good enough. Like I said the reason is they do not get enough snaps early and are not given a chance to prove their worth.

Why was Sintim held back and turned into a rushing DE? He was drafted to be a SAM. He could not be worse than Danny Clark who is abysmal at tackling and coverage. Sintim should have been moved into the SAM as soon as he was healthy. Goff should have gotten snaps early to find out if he was capable of doing the job. If not then we had enough time to find someone before the season or at the beginning to backup AP.

You cannot put this on Reese, I stopped reading Garafolo a while back, he's not on target and afraid to get cut off by the Giants. But when I went back and read he partly blamed Reese I just laughed, the guy is a bit clueless. Look at our safety situation. CC Brown was a good SS but a terrible FS, why was he moved to FS when even I knew he was not a cover guy? Johnson was here longer and had played FS before. Johnson should have been moved to FS and Brown to his natural SS. Huge mistake in personnel decisions. Can you blame Reese? Did Coughlin say JR get me another safety we have a problem before the season started? It takes the coach to tell the GM hey I need this or that get it for me. Reese always comes up with players. Coughlin always waits too long to let Reese know that he needs someone.

Coughlin always favors his veterans over young players and it always bites him in the rear end at the end of the season because the young players are not ready to contribute and there are injuries. He got lucky in 2007 with Boss and Bradshaw. Boss never saw the turf until Shockey got hurt, how come Boss was not given snaps from the beginning of the season? TC got lucky that Boss was ready. Reese has given him the best talent considering were we draft. Couglin never uses it until he is desperate and by then it's too late and they are not ready. Why is Barden not getting a chance all season? Because he made a mistake playing specials? You keep a potential play making WR off the roster because he made a mistake on specials considering our redzone issues. He would rather have Hixon and Hagan who both proved they are nothing BUT special teams players. That's the TC mentality.....but young players are going to make mistakes, you live with that like all coaches do because if they are truly talented they will also make great plays as Nicks and Manningham has proven. Again if they were given more playing time earlier as soon as they were healthy they would have been further along.

Which leads me to; Why do we have so many injuries especially leg injuries? Why was Boss not TOLD to wear an up to date helmet? He finally asked for one, it should have been demanded he wear the most modern one available. That leads me to believe we have an issue with preparing the players for the season and demanding the players wear the best and most up to date equipment. Either in the off season or during training camp I see year after year players coming down with hamstring injuries. Canty was never injured before why now all of a sudden, Ross and so many other with hamstring and knee injuries on this team. Something has to be done, we have to scientifically evaluate our training methods to see if we can change and improve them so we don't get all these injuries. If they are preventable let's find out. That was something Coughlin was very clear on when he was hired, what does he have to say about that now? He again did not do what he promised, he hasn't even mentioned it, another Coughlin failure.

We need to get a coaching staff that lives in the 21st century not the 1990's. Beckum was brought in specifically to be used a certain way by Reese, were is it? I sure Reese is over joyed not seeing all his draft picks on the field and seeing washed up veterans instead. Kiwi should have been kept at the SAM, as a DE he is about average, as a linebacker he might have been exceptional, we'll never know. Another poor personnel decision as a knee jerk reaction to losing Osi instead of trading for one or trying to find one somewhere, who's decision was that?

Don't get me started on the play calling, schemes and even plays of the offense. We don't have enough space here. I won't say anything about our defensive coordinator, our performance speaks for itself, both TC hires, both TC guys, both living in the past. Great coaches put players in the right situation to succeed, I do not see this by our coaching staff on the contrary.

Pete- I learned absolutely nothing from Osi in what he said in that interview except his poor judgment in talking more. Did you hear the words from Osi after Dallas? He said how lucky he was to have a job that paid him multimillions per year, that instead of being disappointed about not starting that he had to be grateful for all he had and just do his job and work his way back to the starting rotation. He could have and should have left it there. But he kept talking.

OBVIOUSLY there is tremendous dysfunction. I am an Osi fan who just stated that I want him on my team on Dec 28th:
Osi is a very talented pass rusher who makes phenomenal impact plays with his sack strip score trifectas, but he needs 10 other guys and a coaching staff to help him do his job. A guy like this is part of the answer- this is a guy who Cowher will know how to leverage. This is a guy who is part of the underachievement right now who will achieve again. I sure hope it is with the Giants.

All that bleeds through now is selfishness. Reread all of his words. Me, me, me, I, I, I. Very little about team. All we get from his interview is that "I'm too good a player." That is not leadership. I enjoy disagreeing with that blohard Pat Hanlon (link in 5a)... this team misses the LEADERSHIP of Michael Strahan in the worst way. This team needs leaders in the worst way. But it isn't getting leadership from Osi.

Actually, I think I am the only non Osi fan on this blog. I believe he is an above average DE but is no probowl player. He needs a Strah or a Tuck(when healthy) to make him who he is. He reminds me of Lenoard Marshall. We was good but he was also a product of having LT looking over his right shoulder for his career.

Outside of a new DC and OC, this is the biggest problem this team has
this team misses the LEADERSHIP of Michael Strahan in the worst way. This team needs leaders in the worst way. But it isn't getting leadership from Osi.

Welcome to the blog
we got old much faster than anyone could have predicted
written by mezzanine, December 31, 2009
The changes needed, the changes I think we'll see next year, are mostly clearing away the dead trees. I trust Reese and Coughlin. I think there'll one or two new starters on the offensive line (McKenzie and possibly Seubert). Jacobs may be done but I think Brown and Bradshaw. Eli's is finally an elite QB although he luckily didn't have a truly windy day this year--that had killed him in the past. The defense really got old. I hope Sintim works out--I thought he was their best draft choice and that Phillips is OK. Doesn't look like Goff is the answer MLB and Pierce is finished. Too bad about Wilkinson, gone. We pretty much know the draft priorities--Safety (maybe 2) and DL (at least 2 high ones).
Then I think Coughlin knows he'll have to live and die with a much younger defense. Sheridan doesn't have to go unless a sacrificial lamb is called for.

With The Mayor being my brother and our draft knowledge dileneating from our old man, the racial conspiracy theorist himself; Andy how in God's name can you say they should try to win and that a couple draft spots do not matter? Yes, Accorsi traded up, but Reese will be too busy trying to make water into wine with his 6th and 7th rounders to go from 19 to 15. For every Ahmad Bradshaw there is DeAndre Wright. Look at 2007, yes his draft class was great, but beyond the praise, he didn't trade up for Revis. So we're stuck w/ hamstring ross instead of the best corner in the NFL. That is Jerry Reese for you. In all his drafts since then we traded up twice, but only in the 3rd round, (Kiehl and Barden) and kiehl might as well go on another mormon mission because he sure as shit doesn't want to hit somebody on the football field.

WE HAVE TO LOSE THIS GAME. It puts more heat on the coaching staff and GM from ownership, which will illicit the changes we all are dying for. It also puts us in a position to get a top 2 LBer or DT instead of Top 3. You look at the teams that are hovering in the same draft position as us (Dolphins, Texans, Jags, Broncos) They are all going defense as well. I'd love to see Reese trade our first and third to get up into the top 10 and take Rolando McClain. I'm not saying pull a Ditka, but where our team is right now, I'll take McClain or Eric Berry over an Aaron Ross, Travis Beckum, Jon Goff and Michael Johnson. Wouldn't you? We don't need another Brian Kiehl on our roster, get into the top 10 GET AN IMPACT LBER NOW!

Out of curiousity, are any of you rooting for the Jets sunday? I was raised under the pretense "If the Giants lose but the Jets also lost,All was not wasted." But I'm going to hope they make a run, feasible or not. The better the Jets do, the more embarassing it is to the Giants. The more pressure on us to spend money and make drastic changes to get those last 2,000 PSLs sold and reestablish ourselves as the dominant market in NY.

I'm not all that sold on JR anymore. It took him 2 years to destroy a defense it took Ernie 4 years to create.

Darelle Revis = Aaron Ross+Jay Alford!?
Canty, Boley, Bernard = $25 Mil?

Its sad we have to talk draft in December.
Hey sect 122
written by Roberts, December 31, 2009
I don't think you have to worry about winning against Minnesota this weekend. I expect Bret Faver and AP to shrew us on Offense. And Jared Allen, a speed rusher, is the prototype DE to go against Diehl. I just hope Manning doesn't get hurt.

I would not be surprised to see Minn build a commanding lead (27-3) and then coast the rest of the game. The current edition of the NY Giants doesn't have it in them to make Minn work for it.

Frankly, I think the defense is going to lay down to get people fired. Don't think that these guys don't understand the heat that is being placed on TC, Sheridan, and Gilbride. It's called sabotaging your boss. I think some of the Redskins players did that a few weeks ago.

Just for the record Andy, has any giants team given up "5" 40+ point games in the history of the franchise? Does this team have a chance to make Giants history?

I don't agree with all the negativity regarding Reese. I think his drafts have been better than expected. If a team gets two quality players out of a draft that is expected. Anymore is a bonus.

I think this year we got value from Nicks, and Beatty. The jury is still out on Barden, Beckum, and Sintim.

The year before we got Terrell Thomas, and Kenny Phillips. And I think Mario Manningham has some value too.

The year before was even better. Look at the drafting of other teams before you throw Jerry under the bus.

Totally Disappointed

I am one of the one's who voted for a total staff
firing. There is no inspiration; a waste of talent and allowing players to dictate terms of playing.
Fifty years a season ticket holder and opted to have
my son take my tix and spend $30,000 for the right
to spend $12,500 for next years tix leaves me to wonder.I"ve seen it al the Pisarcik fumble; "Flipper
Anderson's disappearance act",Tarkenton running for his life; Y>A. and Giff; Andy and Sam etc plus 4 Super Bowls. I want BIG BLUE back. Give me a Parcells type coach; someone who can fire a team up..bring
total commitment.Let's hope for better times.
45 plus years
written by BigDaddy, December 31, 2009
I remember when Allie Sherman was the coach. I remember those lean years, so many of them. Little bright spots like Ron Johnson, John Mendenhall, Brad Van Pelt.

Parcells was a coach who was firmly entrenched in both the future and the past. That's what we need, a coach who knows the past but is cutting edge like Parcells was and to a large extent still is with his wildcat thing.

TC is firmly entrenched in mud. The flowers are dead time to replant some new ones. Jerry Reese is one of, if not the best talent evaluator and drafter in the NFL. I have no issues with him on any draft pick. I am really into scouting and the draft and he has done better than anybody could expect. We will replenish the defense and people will get healthy. But what's the sense if we go back to doing things the same Coughlin way? Boley and Canty will prove their worth. And CC brown if resigned will play OK at the SS as a backup the reason he was signed. Hopefully even Robbins comes back healthy and gets a one year contract if he wants. I just am very disappointed with Osi, he showed his true colors. Frustrated or not he said the wrong things.
another opinion...

So much to discuss, so many ideas today. new people on the blog with their perspectives, we all welcome you. For the past 4 New Years Eves we were all getting ready for the playoffs. It sure does seem strange though.

First of all I want to offer my congratulations to Wonder. I'm sure Andy, that he is thrilled no matter how they made it. Statistically #1 in rushing offense & defense...since we are not there...I hope he has a good couple of weeks ahead.

Let's start with Osi. He is under 30 coming off a major injury. He is not going anywhere because he is an asset to the franchise. He should keep his mouth shut however because he is not being honest with himself. He got benched partly because the defense needed a wake-up call, but really every OC we faced had their units running to his side. If he stops the run, there is no discussion. He has to realize that he has to get better or he is then a very expensive 3rd down player and THEN HE WILL NOT BE AN ASSET.

As far as Pro Bowl balloting....it always was and will continue to be a popularity contest. Once you have established yourself around the league you can make teams forever. I really couldn't give a crap because I never watch the Pro Bowl anyway. Just tell me who made All-Pro...that is something i pay attention to.

Flex games....what else is new? They never cared about the fans...we all know that. TV rules.

Here's something nobody brought up. We will be looking at an 18 game season soon. We now have one week to go in the NFL season and last week the Colts shut it down against the Jets. ( Sorry Wonder) Everyone has an opinion, but if we play 18...you might see teams shutting it down possibly with 3-4 games left if they feel it is necessary. How's that for competitive balance?

With the uncapped year looming the Giants will have many decisions to make. They can actually rid themselves of players with long term contracts and not have any salary cap ramifications. We are going to find out where the really shrewd GM's are because they will also be able sign players and not worry about how much they have to pay. A quick fix can be done with a GM who can navigate this minefield. Let's hope JR is one of them.

Sunday is a throwaway game. I want to see Ramses Barden. I don't care if our special teams suffer because of this. It doesn't matter. I want to see this kid play. Also, play Sintum & Goff the whole game. Let's see if we can find out what kind of players they really are.

What is apparent, is that this team has no emotional leader. Every team needs one. Since the days of Huff & Robustelli to LT, Carson & Simms. The torch passed to Strahan. I would like to think that Tuck was the heir apparent, but he didn't show it. Maybe he is not on the roster yet. Every successful team has one.

We do need an impact player on Defense. We do not have one. Maybe Eric Berry is that guy...I don't know. There are some astute people on this site who do know. Maybe Eric berry is such a player. But, last night I watched Ndamukong Suh play. From what I can see....he is the goods. A dominating player inside who can rush the passer, stop the run, move laterally down the line of scrimmage and throws people to the ground like they were rag dolls. Very impressive. I couldn't help but envision a "93" playing for Big Blue. He would be terrific but he would cost a lot to get him. If Osi doesn't want to play here next season and we give them our #1 ....I'm getting ahead of myself...it won't happen...Happy New Year all!!!

Osi, Manningham, and possibly our 1st or 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft.......to the Rams for their #1 pick. We need Ndamukong Suh BADLY!! Rams get 3 opening day starters who can contribute. We get a massive force in the middle, and take pressure off of Tuck, Kiwi, and Canty. Wishful thinking right??
Really Good stuff

Well,
Welcome to the new guys and respect to the gray beards. First,I want to thank Andy for removing the "cocaine" comment. That was a classy move as you who know me know my tongue is sore from biting on it.
Look,Andy is right. I have tried to point out over and over all season long that there was a disease festering on this team. It is true that Strahan was the glue and that Pierce just couldn't pick up the slack. It is also true that Osi should have kept it to himself. I submit however, that Osi is a symptom,he is not the disease. To play this game well one must think they are special. The good ones are thoroughbreds and high strung. You saw it with Favre, hell, you see it with Peyton Manning, you see it with Ray Lewis, you see it pretty much every week.Osi saw his role diminished significantly by Sheridan in camp. He was/is coming off a big time injury and more than likely very sensitive about it. He is outed by management as the one responsible. No one else was benched,no one else humiliated in public. Coughlin should have said something much earlier. That is but one of his failures. Osi is NOT a great run defender,he never was. The team worked because they had schemes that let him do what he does best. I submit that there are linebackers who are great against the run but can't pass defend. Harry Carson, one of my all time favs was surely one of them. What does a good g.m. do? What does a good coach do? They do what Spags did. They play to the strngths of their players and in the case of the Giants, ordinary players became very good players. It was the schemes, the plans, and the uniqueness of his mind. The other cannot do without factor that Spags brought was his ability to motivate his guys. He got their respect, they brought it,it was amazing. Fred Robbins is a good example of that. He played at a level he never played at before. Spags left and so did Fred's performance. The thing is as some of you have pointed out is that it's chemistry. Good teams become great teams with a G.M. and coaches who believe in each other and who can get the team to believe in them. You are seeing an arguably mediocre team in the Colts win every week because they have Peyton of course but they also have chemistry. Pretty classy of the owner to man up on pulling the starter's last week. Everyone was/is toasting the coach, everyone is a critique. The fact is that everyone was aboard and not ONE player had a negative word to say. You know Peyton wanted it and so did a bunch of others. I myself think they should have tried. Well, the organization made a decision and you have to respect that. If/when they get beat there will be an uproar from the talking heads and all the naysayers.Well, look at what the Colts have accomplished with a first year coach and an arguably mediocre team.
We have serious problems and Osi didn't help. Neither did Pierce,Webster and others who outed the coaches early on. Obviously, that is the disease. It starts at the top and in our case becomes a pandemic.
We have good players and it is not treason to point out problems. A number of us thought that these problems could ruin us and said so BEFORE they metastisized. The team's elitist attitude, the press annointing the defense as unbeatable, the inability of the coaches to realize what they had and how best to use them, all of this ignited what we witnessed.
Thomas,Boss,Smith,O'hara,Diehl,Bradshaw yes, even Manningham played hard all year. Eli always does. Remember in mid season when Jacobs said" I'll quit if I don't average five yards per carry" It kind of reminds me of Tiki ruining a whole season. Why did we let that slide?
There are lot's of reasons why we imploded.Too many to write here. The point is,look at the good teams, the great teams, the good coaches, the great coaches and you see a common thread. I don't much care for Billy B the man but look how he took a mediocre team and got them to the playoffs. Say what you will but he does it every year. Look at what Sean Peton did in New Orleans, look at what Whisenhut is doing in Arizona. Then look at what Phillips and Jerry Jones have done in Dallas,Coughin and Sheridan and Gilbride in N.Y.,Lovie Smith in Chicago and you pick em. from there. The difference is palpable and there is a reason why there are only 32 head coaches,32 G.M.'s, and just a handful of coaches who stand head and shoulders above the rest. The job,the big job is to find those guys and nurture them. They will find the players and nurture them. I come back to Jim Fox and what Sean Payton had to say about him. I use as an example how he managed to bring a disfunctional, injury ravaged team to play at a level to beat the Vikings and us with nothing to play for. There is pride and guts there something, our team lost. You can make a good player a great player and you can make an average player a very good player. That's what it's all about and it's really hard to make it happen.

Great coaches design plays & schemes that maximize the talents of their players and enable them to be successful. Parcels & company didn't start running the wildcat to confuse the opposition, they're running it because that formation facilitates using the best talent on their team.

In 2009 the NYG coaching staff did not maximize use of the talent on this team. Boss is a very good pass receiving TE. Rarely drops a ball, yet only caught less than 3 passes a game this year. Barden is a unique weapon in the red zone, and a potential solution to the NYG red zone problems, yet Barden hasn't had a pass thrown to him this year. Osi has real talent rushing the passer, there's got to be a better way to maximize his talent on a team not successful in putting pressure on the passer. In 2008, Jacobs was very successful running straight ahead, downhill. Yet how many times have we seen him unsuccessfully trying to run wide ? We had to wait until midseason to see Hixon assigned all the kickoff returns, which are his best talent. Despite the fact that he excelled as a returner in 2008. Lack of speed at LB has been an issue all year, yet Sintim got very little playing time this season. In 2008, the shorthanded NYG D was ranked 6th in the NFL. We then added Canty, Boley and Sintim and Osi. How could this year's D be so much worse than 2008 ?

There was plenty of talent on the NYG in 2009 to win 10 games. This suddenly didn't become a talent poor team. We won 12 games in 2008 and then added talent to the team. I believe the poor way the talent was utilized is the major indictment against Coughlin and Sherbrown.

This isn't going to get better in 2010 with other talent. They will just waste the opportunities again. This is why TC & Sherbrown must go.

Oh boy, here we go again with the rooting for losses. Isn't this what started firestorms before? I will hide under my desk, duck and cover...
