Banks: Where are the impact players?
Written by Motown Blue
Tuesday, 24 November 2009 00:00

The original #58 was reluctant to talk about the Giants when prodded at the beginning of his regularly scheduled appearance on WFAN.    Again he reiterated the “same concerns” regarding “their best players aren’t showing up when you need them to.”

On defense “they ran out of gas” in the 4th quarter.  Carl gives "Bill (Sheridan) a lot of credit” and “thinks they had the right stuff dialed up.  If you want to look at the positive for this defense and ”want to believe 'that they are not that far away' you can point out that "they hit the QB a lot and played decent coverage even though they (Falcons) only have two receivers."

The penalties were a sign of a team wholly lacking discipline.  The pass rush was effective through 3 quarters as per Carl. “Here’s a team (the Falcons) that’s gotten to a state in offense that they were afraid to throw the ball down the field, literally.”  At one point in the game Carl points out that the “Falcons were going to settle for dinksand dunks to see if they can get close enough and all of a sudden 1st down after 1st down and penalty after penalty  Atlanta could run an offense because they had a field to work with, thanks to the Giants' defense.  On a further note regarding Sheridan’s zone blitz packages, as there have been many complaints about it, the “zone blitz package is acceptable” and effective only when “you are getting to the QB” which they were effectiveat through 3 quarters of the game.  Carl made this point 3 weeks ago with the Eagles who blitz constantly as this adds an element of confusion to a QB who has been barraged by defenders.

But in the end for this team, Banks says two things separate them from more losses than wins:  stop 1) “aiding and abetting a struggling offense with penalties” and 2) “talk about not being able to close out” as the defense played decently throughout the game but then “then they come back and act as though you’venever been in the same game.”  They need to understand ”the situation(s) in a game” and “evolving your thought process as a defense” throughout the game both “as coaches and players.”  “You knew in your game plan all week that Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White are your guys to shutdown and the 2 guys on the field that you got to find are Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez” when the game is on the line.  Furthermore, “this speaks to not only maturity of players, but” to the “preparation and understanding when the coach puts this on the board on Wednesday that you haveto evolve your thought process during the course of the game.”  Another damning condemnation of the safety unit is when Carl points out in the red zone that “if you are a Safety” and you see ”Tony Gonzalez you can’t let him get up the seam- you better get a jump on it in a hurry.”  Likewise “if you are a Cornerback or Linebacker” and see Roddy White on an out route “don’t let this guy catch and kill us.”   Bottom line- “those are the thought processes that great defenses have, that’s what great defenses do and great thinking defensive players do.”

On the offensive line “Howard Cross said it perfectly.. 'they’ve got to take it personal.'  There is so much penetration in that backfield that the Running Backs don’t have a chance.”   Carl pointed this out on air on Sunday that “you block em’ 1 time and it’s the same guy that’s in front of you the next time and he beats your butt…..you can’t have that, it’s gotta be personal.”  Bottom line this has been an issue with an offensive line since late last year from the home game against the Eagles through now, inconsistent play.  Perhaps, we have been blinded by the hype they received nationally, such as the SI cover annointing them as MVP?

Carl admits he needs to “manage my expectation for Osi right now” as “I think at this point he maybe just be a sub” (ouch!).  A point in reference is how “Canty played a lot of downs which gives them a lot of beef up front” especially “against the run”.  He goes on and calls Osiout and “still think(s) he should be expected to make more than that 1 big play a game” and his “expectations of him” are to “give me 4 big plays in the 4th quarter, step it up!”

The division is within grasp based on the level of play of in the NFC East. But it depends upon whether offensively they “establish the line of scrimmage” and if “you become a one-dimensional team then expect blitz galore from the Eagles” or as Carl stated “they will blitz until your cross-eyed.”  Much like the Cowboys “you have got to make their Defensive Backs tackle.. if not, their pass rush is going to be an issue to.  Right now the Giants “run game is an accessory to the passing game.”

In response to the absence of A.P. and his replacement, you “get what you get withBlackburn- a smart player a player who’s going to be in position 80-85% and he’s going to make the right decision but the rest of it is whether he’s good enough to make plays.”  There is “enough athleticism out there with Boley, who brings it so much.. and Sintim (eventually)."  In the old days “Harry Carson” wasn’t as fleet of foot as myself and LT but what he brought to the game was dominance.”  I am not sure where Blackburn was supposed to fit into his point here.

Motown’s conclusion and wrap up:  Are we nitpickers or have we been concerned about the penalty issues with this TC team since day one?  We can look back to the OLine with “false start” Petitgout to Special Teams that have always appeared to have their fare share of penalties.  TC has prided himself about discipline and sound fundamentals but why do these issues continue to crop up?

Carl called out Osi and what appears to be the coaching’s staffs diminishing confidence in his ability to handle the run by inserting Canty on obvious running downs.  This humble blog again has called out Osi since the Dallas game about his lack of gap discipline in containing the run.  His point about guys stepping up when it counts makes you wonder how much they really miss the leadership of a guy like Strahan and the alleged discipline of a TC team.

This offensive line has got to figure it out or all the other deficiencies in this team from the safety play to special teams will seem minuscule.  This appears to have started back in December of last year when they faced the Eagles after the infamousgun shot heard round the Giants world.  The (1) decline of the run game over the last 5 games (2) the defensive penetration against the running game and the (3) pass defense will definitely assure them of an early tee time in January.  Are Seubert and MacKenzie more banged up than we know?

By the way, can we finally celebrate what we have been screaming about for what seems like an eternity as per Mosley of ESPN "It's pretty obvious that Giants tight end Kevin Boss is becoming a force in the NFC East" and "I can't imagine a division in the league that has a group of more talented tight ends."

We have been blessed with a great OL for several years now,but it is a fine line in the NFL between being great and mediocre. They are aging and we have to hope they (as the great professionals they are) can bring it up a notch or two for the stretch run. In retrospect, the idea of trading for a Jason Peters so Diehl could be moved inside looks good now. Maybe Beatty will be ready for that in a year or two, but I think we needed that this year. But that would have meant losing Hakeem Nicks (and other picks) and we need Hakeem too. Management should never have gone into this season relying upon CC Brown as our only reserve safety. Brian Dawkins would have been a great fit as a third safety but the money/years he got from the Broncos and his likely desire to start made that impossible (if we were ever interested). Man, I would sure love to see a little of his energy though, and I think it would be infectious. We just seem listless on the field sometimes. And listless doesn't win Super Bowls.
Stole my thunder
written by psffur, November 24, 2009
Banks stolr some of my thunder. I wrote a couple of articles that say pretty much what he is saying but a little more harshly I think. To say that Sheridan is bringing it is just not accurate. The personnel is basically the same slthough Strahan is gone. Boley and Canty and the Seattle flop were supposed to improve on the team that won the big game. Most thought the Giants defense was amongst the best. They aren't even close and the penalties that Banks speaks of are the coaches fault. This is a veteran team that ALWAYS shoots itself in the foot. I pointed that out to Andy. Sounds like Banks is on the same page. He is more gentle and a little soft but he is after all,a Giant for life.

Peter..

I have to respectfully disagree.

The Defense really has changed in personnel and philosophy. The D-Line without Strahan is weaker because he was the "straw that stirred the drink" so to speak. He was an emotional leader and mentor to the "then" young lineman. I believe Tuck is hurt more than he or the Giants want us to believe. Osi, well, to be honest...has been a disappointment. He lacks gap discipline and he might not be back fully from the injury. Or is still carrying a small chip on his shoulder ( summer exit) regarding the philosophy of Bill Sheridan? The interior lineman ( Cofield & Robbins ( serious knee injury) have simply not played well at all. Now that Canty is back we will see, but Rocky Bernard, to my knowledge hasn't done anything. There have been too many runs right up the gut and there seems to be "no push" or rush up the middle forcing the QB to where JT & Osi reside. Now we get to Sheridan, who I believe will be "one & done" He has certainly not inspired his players or do they seem to have a plan. He makes no in game adjustments as the game goes on that can see....and I still contend that Spags never employed all these zone blitzes that he is so fond of. I keep saying it every week and I still see it every week. Oh yeah this week I saw Tuck nearly intercept one in his coverage, but is that where you want Tuck playing defense? I know I don't.

The linebacking unit of 2007 had Kawika Mitchell who to this point has been missed greatly. Antonio Pierce is not the same physically and Danny Clark the replacement for Mitchell is too old.

The secondary has been a disaster. Period. There was never any consideration given to the safety situation that we all screamed about in training camp. We get the injury to Phillips and we become exposed.

So for me, I see the defensive unit changed greatly from two years past.

I do agree about all the penalties. That is very frustrating. The mantra that Coughlin always speaks of is not beating yourself. The TC era has been filled with players who are not disciplined at all.

I know you did not address this, but I think it is worth noting. Danny Ware should be getting more carries in my opinion. Bradshaw is definitely hampered by his foot fracture and I would expect Ware to be integrated more.

Also, I believe it's safe to say that Tynes is on a week-to-week basis now. If Tynes blows another one Thursday, Coughlin will have nine days before the next game to mull over a switch. And if that miss costs them the game, as his wide left nearly did Sunday, he may well be out by the time the team boards the plane back home Thursday night.

He's now 21-of-26 in field goals, including two misses in each of the 20-to-29 and 30-to-39-yard ranges. And he's missed two of his last six.
Don't forget Gibril
written by Go G-Men, November 24, 2009
Peter, I don't see how you can say the Personnel is basically the same. We had a great secondary with Gibril WIlson, James Butler, Corey Webster just starting to go off and a healthy Aaron Ross. They were very good players that enabled us to have a better pass rush. Maybe when we had Kenny Phillips things were closer, but we've only won one game since he went on IR. Corey Webster is all we have right now, and if you remember, he only started to break out of his shell against Tampa when we were already in the playoffs. RW and Sam Madison even contributed regularly with pics, though they were old and certainly not shut down corners like Corey Webster. The bottom line is Dockery, B. Johnson, Rouse, M. Johnson, CC Brown and a banged up Aaron Ross are not even close to the secondary of 2007. I'm not happy with the Zone Blitz Packages, but I think there was improvement in the first three quarters, and I think we need to give Sheridan a little more leniancy. More so than his play calling I am concerned with the lack of adjustments he seems capable of making. Either the Giants Defense is getting gassed, or after three quarters offenses are figuring out how to beat them.

Down the stretch I see Canty, Boley and Ross being a huge factor in our Defense, and if Pierce can return for the Philly game I see our opinions on Sheridan turning around down the stretch. Let's hope so anyway.

They might be in a position for first in division, BUT can anyone seriously see THIS team (not the 2007 Giants) going into either NO or Minn and not being embarrassed?

Everything would need to come together at the right time, starting with the defense.
1) Ross becomes a Safety savant in the next 6 games
2) Sintim (Goff/Kehl?) injects life into slow LBers
3) Boley becomes the range answer at LBer
4) Canty finally clicks
5) Osi starts feeling and playing at 90something percent
6) Tuck heels
7) Sheridan makes more timely adjustments
smilies/cool.gif Depth at DL finally pays dividends with guys like Robbins having legs

For Gilbride to merely find his TE is huge, it opens up plenty of possibilities for the offense. The OL can play better.

So there is a small chance of them getting it together. But there is going to need to be a lot of improvement between now and season's end, not just winning, but good winning, in order for this team to be able to play with the bigs. Maybe at MINN on Jan 3rd the team can find itself. It's a long shot, but I've seen crazier things in the NFL. Probably the biggest problem is the leadership. Who is in that lockerroom demanding it all on the field? Jacobs and Pierce are the only voices and they are neutered. UFN= until further notice, meaning until further notice we are going nowhere. We need too many things to go right. If the Giants had one more thing go right per week, it would be the way to climb out of this.
Anybody See What Easterbrook Said About Boss?
written by RussWellen, November 24, 2009
Kevin Boss of Jersey/A [as Easterbrook calls the Giants] now may be the NFL's best tight end. Dallas Clark and Tony Gonzalez are better pass-catchers, but Boss is the better blocker: If NFL general managers held a draft of tight ends, I bet Boss would be the first selection.

First 6 games, 0 TDs, last 3 games, 4 TDs. Do I dare say that Gilbride finally discovered his TE? Could you imagine where this guy would be already in any other offense? We have to wonder over here in Giantville whether he'll disappear again or not. This guy will break the logjam at the red zone permanently.

Shopping for a kicker...
written by TrueBlue, November 24, 2009
I see the Falcons brought in 4 unknowns for kicking tryouts since they too have issues at the position with Elam.

I think we should trade them Tynes for coupons to Sizzler. Both are bound to make you sick either way...
