The Giants have a chance to move to within 1 game of the division lead with a win over Dallas next Sunday.  How many of you truly have a modicum of confidence that they will win, much less be competitive, after what we have witnessed the last month and a half?

There are always signs of teams cracking at the foundation when there is turmoil and questioning on the interior.  From players hinting a lack of confidence in the play calling to Osi barking at his offensive teammates during the recent debacle in Mile High.  Does this bring back memories of the schism between the defensive unit and offensive unit in the Dan Reeves era when the defense was openly barking at the offense?  Jacobs, in response to a question regarding the running game, responded with “we’ve got to go out and do what we’ve got to do and what coach calls.”  Vacchiano interprets this as questioning the coach: “When someone trots out the ‘we’ve got to run the plays that are called’ line, it usually means they’re not happy with the plays that are called.”  To expand upon his point Vacchiano goes back to what Running Back Coach Ingrams stated during the bye week: “that the problem with RB Brandon Jacobs was that he was being asked to run stretch plays and sweeps that he was ill-suited to run.”  Well, how many times did we see those plays run with Jacobs this past Thursday evening?  Vacchiano again adds that “Gilbride seemed surprised by that candid remark and he’s coaching like he doesn’t agree.”  Okay now you have a RB coach and your starting running back questioning your offensive coordinator.  Does this sound like a sign that they are a well disciplined cohesive team that TC preaches? There is a history here with Coughlin, as Tiki and Shockey openly criticized the coaching.

Or has TC lost touch with the team as a whole?  In TC’s presser Friday he “thought the one-point loss to San Diego followed by the victory over Atlanta” was an indication that the Giants “were beginning to ascend right there and build momentum.”  Well how much momentum and fire did they breathe Thursday evening?  Myers, who has never been a supporter of TC, believes that this “shows that Coughlin does not have the same feel for his team that he had two years ago. He has looked lost on the sidelines as he's been unable to find solutions. He is not reaching his team. It is not responding to him.”  This is a very astute response by Myers and a point that many have hinted openly on this blog for the past week.  Perhaps they’ve lost him and not the other way around?

Saturday Peter gave a great analysis of how a great organization adapts and changes to compete in the “not for long” (NFL) league.  Again this goes back to what was posted last week on the Banks interview with WFAN.  Banks commented on how Barden’s ”way on the field with Coughlin is that you have to understand everything that is expected of a wide receiver.”   Trent Dilfer discussed on Cowherd on ESPN how “Belichick and the Patriots identify the strength and weaknesses of their personnel better that any team in the NFL and do a tremendous job of making sure players are asked only to do things they are good at.”  Both TC and Belichick are Parcells disciples. Which way makes more sense to you?  Reese is drafting talent but the HC clearly doesn’t have a sense or plan on how to utilize these guys in his scheme.  The Patriots draft players with the intent and purpose of utilizing their strengths within their schemes, not benching them until they “understand everything that is expected of” their position.  Many of you can summon a list of neglected talent (..a TE named Boss?).

Finally, here is a list of past TC coordinators: Gilbride OC, Palmer OC, Jauron DC, Capers DC, and Moeller DC, Hufnagel OC, Lewis DC.  How much confidence does this inspire in you with him continuing to head this franchise?

Great commentary Mo.

I'm still a TC supporter. But you make some interesting points. We can only hope that Dallas doesn't light us up this weekend.

I am personally afraid to watch this game Sunday. I hate hate hate it when the Giants lose and to lose to Dallas is just so much worse.

Re Jacobs and stretch plays during Doncos game. . . weren't those just plays intended for inside that, for lack of daylight, he bounced outside?
exactly!

Spot on Mo. Jacobs is 265 pounds and he was supposed to go up the middle. If a team can't punch it in from the 1 they are in trouble. If the d is stacking(which they do a lot) throw a short pass cause no one is defending. The red zone record speaks for itself. The idea is a well coached team scores most of the time. Play action is available and of course the lob pass. I think Boss or Skmith can handle it and there is also Hicks. You can't stack the middle and cover everyone.
Ravens-Steelers-One more thing

Example,example,example,
Last night the Ravens and the Steelers played an interesting game. Those of us who stayed up saw an exciting finish. Two good teams and a very important game. The Steelers had to go with Dennis Dixon,a big difference from Ben.
Late in the fouth quarter John Harbaugh made a call that some here will call irresponsible and others like me will say it was a risk that if done very selectively can make a season.
Two weeks ago Billy B made a similar high risk win or lose it call. His call went up in flames. It was fourth and six and the Ravens could punt and still have a chance. The call was running back Rice over the middle for a first down. The Ravens made it and won the game. Couhghlin,Gilbride have NEVER made such a call. The Ravens saved their season and made the playoffs seem probable. In the post game interview Rice and mlb ray lewis were just elated. You could see and hear the elation, determination they had.
This is an example of play to win football. This is what the Giants never do. Nuff said.

At the end of the radio broadcast, a frustrated Carl Banks uttered, "Another red zone failure." Recall, with a few minutes remaining in the game against Denver, the Giants offense were very methodic. As time elapsed, the Giants drive stalled inside the red zone.

Failure. Coughlin has failed us. He needs to go.

Great job Mo.

Nice blog MO. I think the point about the list of TC's choices speaks volumes. His only real quality choice was Spag's. There is an old saying that goes like this, show me who a person hangs with and I know what the person is. The list tells you all you need to know.

My whole problem with the Denver, NO, and Philly game was not that we lost, but that we never really tried. And we were never really in those games. That is the coaches fault. We are not 20 points inferior to the Broncos.

If we lose this weekend, the season is over. And I expect us to lose this weekend.

i think the dallas and philly games will tell us what we need to know in assessing the pride and character of this team and these coaches....if we lose both of these games, and we show the same sort of listless play as we have in past weeks, with no ability to run, no ability to cover, and no ability to tackle, then i think there will be a tidal wave of pressure to have a changing of the guard for next year...if somehow we can win both games, then i think we are very much in the running for a playoff spot and i will withold any judgment until the season is over..with a split who knows....i have not given up on this season just yet, though as bob dylan has said, "it is not dark yet, but it is getting there."

Win maybe; Dallas isn't that good.
Competitive vs. the NFL?
8-8 or 9-7.
The symbol of mediocrity.

I still think we beat dallas. Its crazy the Saints pull guys like McAllister and Mckenzie last minute to add depth and fill in for their injured secondary. Why could the Giants not have done this? Two seasoned veterans. And they both tore it up tonight against the Pats, Tom Brady and Randy Moss. Moss had 60 yards receiving. Unreal. And btw, took a big gamble on Sharper and he's leading the league in interceptions. When in the NFL have the Giants ever had a defensive back lead the league in interceptions? Never! Why, why why with our secondary problems that we've always had, could we not even have made one of these moves!? Pathetic.
What a back field
written by Duke, November 30, 2009
I agree they are stretching Jacobs But just think if Coulghin didn't force Tiki Barber to retire. We could have had a great backfield with so many options either pass or run on any down. I'm sure Tiki would have been happy that he would have had somebody to share the load, What could have been a destiny oh well wishful dreaming

The amazing thing, Mayor, is that necessity is the mother of invention, and obviously there WAS necessity. We could have picked up a Safety out of NECESSITY. No Eli backer wants to hear this, but I'll be the bad boy.. when you pay this guy 100M, the cash has to come out of somewhere, so you try to squeeze 1M, 1M there, it will cost Reese somewhere. Reese the magician maybe is a little less so because he has to manage the coins a little tighter, maybe not spending a little on Sharper, who I would have much preferred over Butler if I am spending for a Safety. Why is this hypothetical Safety talk that mayor and I mention so FREAKING REAL??? NO, Not Monday Quarterback... try Saturday Afternoon Roster... YOU HAVE THREE SAFETIES ON THE ROSTER. THREE.
not much confidence in a victory

I'm pulling my pension, stocks, savings, lottery winnings, OTB scores, ashtray change, beer money (OMG---that's about $30 bucks) and betting Giants, plus 2.5 to catch the Cowboys. Why? Because the NFL wants the "drama" to continue so we invested fools stay focused!
