Saints 31 Colts 17

Great game, you cannot ask for much more than that...

For those of you who saw the words of Phil Simms earlier Sunday in the pregame, wow did it help prep us for what we saw.  And Glenn was also not surprised by the Colts 32nd ranked running game, which kept the Saints off balance early.  Simms focused us on a very competitive Saints offense that he thought would be able to move the ball.  And his remarks about Sean Payton were there for everyone to hear...

"Payton is not afraid to put it out there.  You can never be afraid of going down in flames.  The Saints will go for it and do something special."

Phil Simms compared Sean Payton to Bill Parcells.  In everything.  You don't think Payton's time as Offensive Coordinator to Parcells when they were at Dallas had anything at all to do with the reason why the Saints won a title?!!!!!!!  Damn straight it did.  Payton laid it out there, he played to win.  Sometimes your gambles don't work out.  Sometimes they do.  But his players play for him because they respect the aggressiveness.  Going for it at the goal line in Q2 is fine because the field position is still there, and you see the resulting FG he got one possession later.

The on-side kickoff for the start of Q3?!  STEEL B*LLS.  Good for him.  Get busy living or get busy dying.  The Saints were behind on tempo the entire first half and that play put them in a position to drive down the field and finally take the lead.

Did you notice that at 2nd and goal from the 2 in Q4, Payton did not make the same mistake twice and this time he went to the TE for the TD?!  You need the wide body in the redzone, not the YAC.  That is why we preach over and over again why you must use the TE consistently there, and why Gilbride suffers when he does not.

The challenge of the 2 point conversion was a layup.  Nothing to lose, except a timeout.  Plus it was properly overturned.

At the beginning of the game the Colts were rushing well up the middle, disrupting Brees as was noted on Friday.  But by Q2+, Brees had as much time (and space in front of him to step up and) to throw the ball as Peyton Manning, which meant the Saints were going to have an oppty if they just got tempo.  And that came on the onside kickoff.

I was not expecting Manning to make such a collosal error on the Porter INT.  I saw Manning getting a tie score, but obviously we know the rest.  Sure, we have seen Manning make boners before, but not like this.

The fact that the Saints won does not surprise any of us here.  We called for a very competitive game with the Saints having a shot.  Kudos to Pete and Glenn who stepped out on the plank and called for the 5 point dog to win the game outright.  Peyton Manning is usually money, but the Saints defense played well after Q1, bending but not breaking.  That FG at the end of H1 to make it 10-6 was such a lift for the Saints.

I DID NOT LIKE THE FG CALL BY CALDWELL to send Stover, a 42 year old kicker, out for a 51 yarder.  BAD BAD BAD.  (1) He's too old to likely have the leg for it (2) You take the ball out of Peyton Manning's hands. (3) You give the ball back to the Saints at the 41 yard line.  The Saints used that great FG position to march down the field for the go ahead score.

Oh, one more thing... did that forever Super Bowl halftime (30 mins vs the normal 12) give Dwight Freeney's ankle too much time to stiffen up/abandon him?  He disappeared figuratively and literally in the second half.  You think that made Brees and the Saints a little more effective?  It had to.

Congrats Saints.

Fantastic wrap of a Saints Super Bowl win. The party has started!! The question will be: When will it end?

I thought the turning point of the game was the personal foul penalty against the colts on the saints first FG drive. If the colts don't make that play, they win. Amazing how one play can change the dynamic of a game. The Saints where on there way to losing this game easily till then.
If you believe in destiny

Well,
That was fun. After a pretty poor first quarter by the Saints and a masterful 9 minute drive by the Peyton Manning it looked like this was going to be another Super Bowl mismatch. It wasn't. Drew Brees came out flat and the Saints defense was giving Peyton exactly what he wanted. No pass over 15 yards and a precise short passing attack of which he is a master. He was hitting his running backs and Garcon at will. I am still wondering why Garcon was not more of a factor. The kid was awesome two weeks ago and seems to be the real deal. He is always getting open and has good hands. The first T.D. of the night was picture perfect. Little did we know that although,Peyton was 32 for 38(a super bowl record) his numbers were and will be misleading. The Saints held for three on the next drive and old Mo and maybe destiny took over. The Saints stiffened on defense and a little known place kicker who replaced John Carney in a desperation move set another Super Bowl record with four field goals of over 40 yards. He,in my opinion was the M.V.P. It wasn't even close. The Saints scored twice(in the second quarter) and we had a game.
I am accused of being a Coughlin hater which,I am not. I just think he is simply a second tier coach who has no guts and no imagination. Sean Payton went for it on fourth and goal. Most coaches wouldn't do that. Sean Payton opened the second half with an onside kick.Billy B is the only guy I can think of with that kind of moxie. I wouldn't have tried the onside kick in a close game with Peyton Manning on the other team. What you come to realize is that Payton and Billy B are winners!! Their teams pick up on the energy and confidence they possess and it shows!!
The Saints won this game despite all the experts only pointing out how poorly they played for several games. What they failed to realize is that this team was special. This team had Drew Brees who does nothing more than win games. He leads by example and he is special. The guy had a career ending injury for a quarterback as his "throwing" arm was shattered. No one would take a chance except the Saints. The Dolphins red flagged him but the Saint's did not. He wanted a lot of money for a big risk but the Saints took it.They hired Sean Payton, brought in players like Jonathan Vilma and Jeremy Shockey, survived major injuries, took chances but.most of all the good guys won! The "ainn'ts of just a few years ago went from doormat to champions of the world and a city which was devastated found something to get behind. Shockey, who has endured a troubled mind, numerous injuries and and turned against his team got his ring and a touchdown catch to boot. Vilma got a ring after suffering with the then hapless Jets. Payton got his chance to be a head coach. It was destiny I tell you and and a bunch of guys and a City in need got glory.
My congrats to the Saints and the Colts who played hard, had a great season, are a class operation with arguably the best quarterback to play the game.

At the time, I thought the 4th & goal was the wrong call, but the defense got the ball right back and they got the FG anyway.

But....when you start the 2nd half with an on-sides kick, that is about as ballsy a call you can make. If you dissect it though, it makes perfect sense. The last thing Nawlins needed there was for Peyton to take his team down the field and score after studying during the "long" halftime break. The momentum would have been regained by Indy. Not many coaches as was said before would have had the "stones" to make that call. Having said that, I said at the time when Indy attempted that long field goal it was a mistake and the turning point of the game. Giving the "who dats" the ball at the 41 was a huge mistake.

Two coaches with two different philosophies...and we all saw the result.

4th and goal call goes either way. Colts really hurt themselves when they went all Gilbride and ran three times up the middle without a 1st down giving the ball and momentum right back tot he Saints. 10-3 and a goal line stand is much bigger during halftime. Peyton couldn't throw for a two yard first down to end the half.
A Coaching Revolution?

Questions for UNYG readers:

1. Will Payton's success inspire NFL coaches to abandon their conservative tendencies and play more aggressively?

2. Has anybody ever seen a group of receivers with better hands than the Saints' crew?

I rooted against the Saints only because Shockey is on that team. They deserved to win though. The Colts were outcoached.

Answer to Russ Wellen - this is part of the reason the Colts were outcoached. You're playing the New Orlean Saints and you don't prepare for an onsides kick at any moment? The first year he was with New Orleans, the Saints went into Dallas against Parcells and kicked the Cowboys' butt. After scoring a TD in the 3rdQ (going on memory here) Payton turned right around and kicked an onsides kick. A mild whipping turned into a merciless killing by the Saints. Going for it is in his blood. The Colts should have been prepared on every single kick off for an onsides kick.

If every coach in the league starts doing it then every coach in the league will prepare for it and surprise plays will be less surprising thus less successful. The short answer is no. Teams will have to game plan against the Saints for them though. Which will play right into the Saints' hands.
If my team isn't in it - I don't care...

Basically, I've been a defender of Giant management, and it's decisions. Of course, I don't consider myself blindly loyal. One thing that the Super Bowl made me think about was Shockey. Much has been made of how the Jints used him (or misused him). I always felt that he was in decline, his wheels were affected, and he was the same headcase trapped in a less talented body. Although he got his touchdown, I thought, and this is without considering what a lockerroom headache he probably was - the Giants management certainly got this one right. Hard to believe he's only 28 - does this look like a star in his prime?

Remember all those Mickey Mantle comparisons early on in Shockey's career? Who would have imagined just how appropriate that was. Key difference: everyone says how great Mantle was and 'if only his knees had held up' and of course if he didn't drink-what if...Shockey showed flashes of Mantle superhuman talent, but he also showed the propensity to fall apart in body and mind.

Boss had 42 ctchs, a few less than Shockey - 2 more TD's. Granted I didn't follow the Saints, and I'm assuming Shockey was hurt where Boss wasn't (although damn if Eli didn't seemingly try to get Boss decapitated). Nevertheless, we turned a clearly declining Shockey into immediate further development for Boss, throw in Clint Sintim (who I like so far) and Rhett Bomar (also promising). This is an example in my mind of what strong organizations do.
well,that's what makes horse racing!

I do NOT think that Caldwell was out coached. I think Jim Caldwell did an incredible job as a first year head coach. He went with what brung em and 13 in a row isn't a bad way to start a season. The Saints were the superior team if you go player to player. I put my money where my mouth is by picking them to win. The Colts are all about Peyton Manning. As Peyton goes,so go the Colts. Their 13 game streak if looked at closely was not the norm for such a thing. There were a number of very close games and several where the Colts were behind by more than a touchdown. I'm talking 3rd and 4th quarter here and, they won them all. It boils down to a good, not great offensive line,an average defense,a poor running game and arguably the best QB to ever lace em up.
The Saints have an above average defense although, they had a lot of nicks. Sharper made a big difference and Drew Brees had a great season which was the difference maker. Two top quarterbacks, very good receivers and grit. It played out as I thought it would when Peyton made that bad throw.
I disagree about Schokey. He was my favorite player for 3 or four years. Yes,I have a Shockey Jersey. He was corrupted by the big city and a management that let him run wild. As I have said, what other team would allow two starting receivers to kiss off summer camp? The Giants did,Tom Coughlin did and that just destroyed the rythmn a team has to have. No discipline,no harmony,Eli Manning publicly begging for his go to guys to show up.Eli being ignored, his ego and leadership ability buried? I still can't believe it.
Shockey lost his mind somewhere and became a distraction,a negative a rebel who had to go. Shockey also played ball as it should be played. He was great and he was tough. That's why his body betrayed him. The same is happening to Jacobs. After playing his ass off he got hurt. Well, that sent Jeremy over the edge. He,as much as anyone deserved a ring and he couldn't play. Jeremy could not handle that emotionally and that was it. Yes,the Giants did the right thing but I was happy to see Shockey get a ring and catch a T.D. He was my guy. He played the game the way it should be played. He lost his mind but he had his day of redemption. I LIKE it.

I don't see the disagreement on Shockey. That he's a talented player is without question. When he first came out, he was unbelievable. It's always fun to watch a guy who's scrappy and talented (although the wisdom of that kind of play can be questioned). Jacobs and Shockey are fun to watch because they "posterize" the other guy - but at what cost? And as to whether you're personally happy for him or not - that wasn't relevant to my point. That's a subjective thing. He got his TD and his ring - good for him.

My point was it really good for the Giants? You seem to agree he had to go (although you're saying he was enabled by TC - I don't think the summer camp matters all that much in the scheme of things). The issue at the time of his leaving was whether trading Shockey was the right move (putting aside his TO antics). Boss had that catch in the Super Bowl, but it was uncertain whether he was a true replacement for Shockey. If we're talking about "young" Shockey, it's pretty clear that Boss isn't anywhere in that realm. In fact, if Boss didn't pan out at all and if Shockey had the same "zip" to him, I think a lot of people would be questioning the trade now. Although Shockey was hurt coming off the broken leg, I didn't hear much at the time of the trade that he was a guy losing value (based purely on his football abilities, not psychologically). We knew he was getting hurt, but I didn't hear much about him essentially NOT being the same player at the time of the trade. Now that some time has passed - the picture still isn't 100% complete, but we have a better idea now that the "players to be named later" have been named (Sintim, Bomar). I LIKE that.
