Super Bowl Preview

Today we preview Super Bowl XLIV: Indianapolis Colts vs the New Orleans Saints

A while back we discussed the league's quarterbacks and Wonder said that Peyton Manning was the #1 QB with Drew Brees #1A.  The only difference between the two, he went on to say, was that Manning could handle the pressure/blitz packages better than Brees, but that essentially they are both terrific QBs.  We bring this point up now in discussing the Super Bowl because the next step in previewing this game is.. how do you throw off the timing of these great QBs?

"WHICHEVER DEFENSE CAN PRESSURE THE PASSER IS GOING TO WIN THE GAME."

Dwight Freeny, who has been hobbled by an ankle, is not 100% and was not practicing.  As a speed rusher, how effective can he be on a bad ankle?  He said he is feeling a little better.  If he is feeling a lot better by Sunday, that's a huge help to the Colts.

EVERYONE KNOWS BOTH OFFENSES CAN LIGHT IT UP.

This game is not really about offense.  If there is any issue at all on offense, it is about the Saints needing to run the ball a little more so than the Colts.  So Thomas/Bush become more important to simply keep the Colts defense honest enough to respect the run.  The Saints do not have to run well, they just have to be able to get 4 unexciting yards per carry.  They'll will have success when they do not have a great running game, but they'll have more success when that part of the offense is functioning.  This is why the lowest common denominator goes back to that defensive pass pressure/pass rush.  We have said this before here on UltimateNYG- rush Brees up the middle and crush that pocket.  He does not like his passing lanes to be blocked.  And he needs to see downfield because he is not that tall a QB.

Wonder: Colts 34-31 or Colts 31-27, something like that. (ie Colts win but do not cover.)

Andy: I felt after the Colts-Ravens playoff win that the Colts were beatable.  Nothing profound here- the Saints can win with their 'A' game, the Colts WILL win with their 'A' game.  BUT, the question is whether we see the Colts' 'A' game.  I am not convinced we will.  The rest helps the Saints.  They are a track meet team who has done well each time they had rest.  All of the pundits are picking the Colts... I'll take the Saints (Saints cover and have a respectable shot at winning the game).  No going on 'record' with a strong prediction.  I'm really just rooting for a competitive game.  I think we get that and more.

I take the Colts but not to cover. The Saints are the 2007 Pats all over again. They lite the league up at the biginning of the year, only to come back down to earth. Both teams should have lost in the Championship game but got lucky.

I don't agree with wonder about Manning and Brees unless he is just talking this year. Manning might be a top 3 QB of all time IMHO, Brees is just having a very good year. Let Brees do have this kind of year on bad teams, year after year then then we can talk.
Come on Capt. George

Capt,
Drew Brees has played on some lousy teams namely the one he plays on now. The Saints were pretty awful when Brees came aboard and he is the main reason they are in the Big Dance. The guy is incredible. One must remember He was seriously injured and cut by San Diego. He wanted to play for Miami but they said he failed his physical. As all top quarterbacks Drew thought well of himself and asked for mucho coin. The Saints bit and in four years they are in the Super Bowl.Superbowl.Drew Brees more than anyone else got them there and Sean Payton didn't hurt. It's Drew's team so lets give him credit. He also is a high character guy,a leader.
When you compare Brees to Manning you compare him to one of the top five quarterbacks of all time. It's folly to say he is better than Staubach,Unitas,Starr(in that system or Montana not to mention the likes of Baugh and maybe even Brady. Who has won more big games, more super bowls than Tom Brady. You can also argue that Peyton is the best ever and it would be fair. I just want to say that Peyton was almost a bust for 5 years until the Colts could build a team around him. If he played for a team(like his dad did -the Ai'nts) he probably would never had won anything. I wonder sometimes about guys like Griese and Starr who played in a system but who were perfect for their team. How would you rate them. Peyton is great,no doubt about it and Brees has been excellent his entire career.

Wonder was referring to this year. As for Brees in his career, he's done plenty. Yes, it is unfair to compare him to the Peyton Manning show, as few can be compared. One of these two has to lose on Sunday, and it really should not detract from what each has accomplished. For me, I love what Brees has done to Pea Brain Shockey. Basically Brees told that alpha male that he runs the show and you'll get the ball when it is good for the team. Eli or the coach needed to do that to Shockey when he was here in NY, but it never got done. If I knew Shockey was 100%, the Saints would be a surefire bet on Sunday because he makes that offense go from being excellent to unstoppable. The value of a good TE in the NFL is enormous. (Someone please tell our offensive coordinator that.)

As far as I'm concerned....this is what i want answered

Which Who member smashes his guitar on stage?
How many times will Pete Townshend do his legendary windmill move?

I found out that The Who will play a 15-song medley during the Super Bowl's halftime show, and Rock Band will feature that same medley as a $2 download the same day (on Xbox 360 and Wii, anyway -- the PS3 version will arrive later). The identities of the songs contained in the medley will be unknown until the Super Bowl performance, but, really, they're all good.
