The 2010 N.F.L. Draft
Written by Peter S Furman
Thursday, 04 February 2010 00:00

I think we all pretty much agree that the Giants greatest need is at middle linebacker. Antonio Pierce has lost a step, aging and suddenly injury prone. We could use an outside linbacker but there are no apparent game changers in this years draft. Someone could always be a sleeper but usually not in the middle. This year there is one player who stands out as a difference maker and his name is Rolando McClain. McClain played at Alabama under Nick Saban and was the leader on a very good defense. He is leaving after his Junior season and has all the tools. He is a physical specimen at 6'4" and 248 pds. He runs a 4.6 and his attitude and character are unquestioned. He may or may not fall to us but it is possible. Most of the teams drafting ahead of us have other needs. It seems like Denver and Kansas City are our primary concerns but both have other pressing needs as well. Here is my list!

(1) Rolando McClain-Alabama 6"4" 248lbs

(2)Brandon Spikes 6'3" 244lbs-Florida

(3) Daryl Washington 6"3" 228lbs-T.C.U.

(4)Sean Lee  Penn State 6"2 234 lb

(5)Micah Johnson 6'2" 254lbs-Kentucky

(6)Boris Lee 6'0" 232lbs-Troy State

These are the six guys as I would rank them but there is a lot of space between #1 and #6. Brandon Spikes is projected anywhere from 15 to middle second round. He played at Florida and is slow. He does play agressively and he hits but, I was never impressed with Florida's defense and can't think of anyone who hasn't busted as a pro. Daryl Washington projects as round 3 but I give him a good shot at being a very good player. He played for the Horned Frogs and they have been college footballs best "no one ever heard of team" The guy can play.

After that there are a bunch of guys but no one who should be more than a middle round to late round guy. I picked Sean Lee out of Penn State because he is a very good player and he does come from Linebacker U. Micah Johnson is a big tough guy who can really play. He is big and mean and maybe the sleeper in this group. I chose Boris Lee out of Troy State because I have a thing for players from Troy State. He is short a 6' and 232lbs. All he did was lead a very good team in tackles the last two years with 4.5 sacks and he stings you. Osi and Demarcus Ware are Troy State products as is the safety that Buffalo took first last year. Turns out he was the best player on the team!!

So, there is one guy who is a no brainer  and one who possibly grades out in the first round. This is why we have to be ready to sign a free agent, make a trade or go for another big need. I wonder what will happen with Mays. Don't be surprised if he falls to us and then we will have to decide where he could play. There are a number of very good O-Linemen and a few safeties who might be there at 15 and we will talk about the outside backers and safeties next time.

I am picking the Saints in the Super Bowl 27-21 over the Colts.

Tiki ans a kittle more.
written by psffur, February 04, 2010
Wonder left out a tid bit that I found. Tiki said that Adrian Peterson is a liability to his team. He said that he fumbles too much, so he is a liability. Talk about Chutzpah. Peterson does fumble too much but he surely isn't a liability to his team. Even if Tiki thought that he should have shut his mouth. Peterson is arguably the best young runner in the game. He has helped the Vikings a lot more than he has hurt them. He does need a little work on protecting the football and I am sure he will get it. It's just another mean spirited comment from Tiki.
As an adendum to my draft article I want to say that there is depth at D.T. and even at safety. I talked about the depth at O-line and next I will address these areas. I am partial to Cody out of Alabama. He is just massive and an amazing athlete for a 375 pound guy. He says he want to play at 345, a mere shadow of himself but this guy, if he can control that weight and play hard when he's in there, will be an all pro for 10 years. He is huge and he is quick. I saw him play several times and he did it all. You can't run through him and it's tough to run around him. He even blocks field goals by pushing his man straight back. It's not a big reach for the Giants at 15 because he is projected to get gobbled up in the top 20. Pittsburgh is the team as an aging Hampton is about done. There are risks and he is a two down player but "oh my" the kid is fun to watch. I really think he would fill another big need as Robbins is done and Cody will make those around him much better. I love the guy and so would George Young. He should be there at 15. The fans will love MT. Cody.

I can't agree with you and must side with Tiki. If you put the ball on the ground you are going to cost your team games, no matter how great you are.

What about Angerer? Saw FreeBrad raving about him over at BBView and from what I've found out about him he seems like he could be a good pick up in the 2nd or third round. Especially if the target studs are gone at our positions of need at 15 and we can trade down.

The problem I see is if we draft a great MLB or DT, will Coughlin let him play ?

Nicks looked great in preseason & camp but didn't break into the lineup to the 2H of the season.
ROLANDO!
written by irishmacmystic, February 04, 2010
thanks peter nice job...i will only try to give you my first 3 picks at this point:

1. Rolando McClain (Joe Haden CB, Brian Price DT possibly OT Bulaga, S Earl Thomas back ups if he is gone).

2. I am big on taking a safety in round 2, but there is a lot of depth at safety, and if someone dropped down unexpectedly at another position we could probably still get a good safety in third round. But still, when I think back to those 40 point games given up on defense, safety sounds good to me: Earl Thomas, S, Reshad Jones, S, Chad Jones S, or S Nate Allen (any of those would be a significant upgrade, and with Kenny Phillip's health in question and Michael Johnson not showing much I am not particularly concerned whether the safety picked is a SS or FS, just the best one. I would be very tempted to veer from this pick if Jahvid Best slipped down to us , and Dexter McCluster RB, Javier Arenas CB Returner CB Devon McCourtey Rutgers or DT Marvin Austin or DT Arthur Jones (could Mt. CODY slide down to here??)would be solid picks.

3. If Dexter McCluster RB, Ole Miss made it to here, I would snap him up. Since that is unlikely, I share Peter's pick of Darryl Washington LB TCU. Others to consider: LB Rennie Curran GA, LaGarrette Blount, RB Oregon (was that you Peter who was thinking about him, or someone else, i know someone liked the idea--i stick with the notion that we better make sure his head is on straight before picking him); OG Mike Johnson, Alabama; CB Kareem Jackson, Alabama; OT Ciron Black LSU; OT Selvish Capers, W VA; Kyle Calloway OT Iowa; Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame (might be there in round 4 also); Matt Tennant, C, BC.

I will stop there for now, only to point out that I would love to have a punter or placekicker picked in round 7 (we do have a round 7 pick right?)...since i am from Pennsylvania will throw in Jeremy Boone P Penn State for that round, and a wild card of CB returner Akwasi Owusu Ansah Indiana University of Pennsylvania (raw project maybe like Vince Anderson, maybe more progressed)(the latter will go much earlier than round 7).

I think one of the keys is whether we pursue a safety in free agency, there are three good to very good safeties who are restricted free agents: nick carter, green bay; antoine bethea, indy; and roman harper, new orleans. we really need a veteran presence (one not named CC) at safety especially if kenny phillips cannot return...i am not in a position to say what that would cost us, in draft picks and money, and maybe andy, peter, motown and others can help with that....i would love to have kenny phillips back at the helm, healthy, with antoine bethea and a draft pick such as reshad jones or chad jones there to learn and back up..maybe michael johnson stays as reserve or maybe not...this may be a pipedream, but that what makes it fun guys!

I agree with most of what you guys are saying. The thing is that I am first focusing on the first round and who might be there for us. I am really warming up to the Texas safety as I study him more. There are three of four other guys who actually might rate consideration at #15.We'll talk about them next. There are also a number of Defensive lineman who are worthy of our picking the first round. Last year there was real depth at mlb and the other linebacker slots. Not so this year.
I still think there are a few restricted free agents who would help us a lot. Did you know that DeMarco Ryans is a rfa? I just don't think that the Texans will let him go and he would cost a lot. Harper would help us as a d.b. and his price should not be a killer. There are a few others including Hampton from Pittsburgh who is an rfa although he is 32 and is breaking down. If we don't draft Cody I bet the Steelers do at 20. There will be players for us in the other rounds but right now I am focusing on who would be the best bet for #1. I haven't gotten my arms around the second round or later yet but we will as the combine is coming up and things should be more clear in the coming couple of months. We do need a punter and a placekicker too.but you can only do so much in one year. A lot of teams really need a placekicker.

You did good.Phillips problem is an arthritic knee. Those things usually don't get better. He hopefully can play but his career will be short. This may be the reaqson he fell to us last year. Someone screwed up in the organization(doctors, trainer) as this condition didn't just happen. Take Canty for example. He never missed a game with Dallas.I like McCluster too and I am seriously concerned about our rb's. There is a lot to be done and we need Reese to do a do over of 07.

rolando mclain could be the key to the giants resurgence...he is very smart and skilled....if we can convince antonio pierce to to stick around to teach him, it could be golden...i insist upon a S in round 2 or 3 and i would love to have rb best or mccluster....GIANTS!
reese will pick wisely
written by xtian, February 04, 2010
we all know we need a mlb and safety badly. i hope the 1st 2 rounds bring us them. but we all also know that stuff happens and reese will pick the best player at the time he picks. i feel good about that.

also i disagree with the idea that safeties arent worthy of a 1st round pick. how about reed, polamula, sanders, phillips and their impact? one of those would change the dynamic of the defense.
safety
written by ultimatenyg, February 04, 2010
polamalu, lott and reed are VERY SPECIAL players. for every special safety that is going to make that kind of impact, I can name you many many more players per position that make a bigger impact. Put another way, you won't see a Safety drafted before 10-15 almost ever in the draft, and then only infrequently in the first round. Reed, Phillips, these types are taken at the END of the first round and then (as noted prevly) it is on the border of round 2 and can make sense. With the Giants at 15, unless I am getting Ronnie Lott I do not want a Safety, I want the LBer. Safety round 2 feels just right.

Outline of a dream draft scenario, only mentioning one player by name and no specific draft picks:
The Giants trade Osi for a first and a third (he might bring more, I'll just go with a low guess there). Then the Gmen trade one of their first rounds down for a 2nd and 4th. This would give them a 1st round and 2 each in the 2nd-4th. Here are the reasons I think this could be best case:
1) Even trading Osi, the Giants still have 3 players who could play DE - Tuck, Kiwi Sintim
2) Trading Osi, and gaining all those picks allows you to pick the best available at your first round spot and positions of need in 2-4. You might not want a WR, but you could take a DE and keep Sintim at LB if DE is far and away the best available at that spot (though I wouldn't take a DE anyway).
3) A new DC running a new system means you can draft fresh players to learn in that system, and players who will fit that system well
4) The uncapped year means the gmen could and probably will cut a lot of players (clean house) making room for any number of these guys that show promise in camp
5) The uncapped year also means the gmen could conceivably sign their 1 and all the 2-4s AND bring in a big name free agent on D.
6) Picks are options. If you think you'd have to reach with one of your 2-4 picks, just trade it for a pick next year. Additionally, those extra picks could be used to bring in a RFA.
I don't know if this draft is deep enough to justify such an aggressive strategy, but the Giants clearly need to clean house on D, and this could be the perfect time to do so.

Trading Osi for a 1st and 3rd is a nice scenario. Realistically, we might be able to get a 2nd and a 5th (see Shockey, Jeremy).
Osi
written by ultimatenygiants, February 05, 2010
I don't know why you guys don't like Osi. I love the guy! He has only been all pro and dominant when the Giants use him properly. He said yesterday that he won't play if he doesn't start! Some might say that is a "trade me" scenario. I beg to differ. I want every one of my guys feeling that way who have the talent. Osi has the talent. He has something to prove so,he has a chip which I also like.
A guy has major knee surgery and you expect him to not miss a beat. Well boys,it doesn't work that way! To come back and play at this level took a lot of work,a lot of courage. It's not Osi's fault that there were a lot of injuries and Sheridan was a flop.I didn't see anyone else get sacks last year! Osi is still young and a Pro Bowl player! He was a key to the super bowl run. Ask Donovan McNabb about Osi,if he is not on his aqss looking up. Six times in one game. I hope we keep Osi and you all are humbled. Where is the love?where is the loyalty?

Michael Strahan says...

"He's not going anywhere. He's too good of a player to let go. Whenever you have these knee injuries you never really come back and have that season you had before the next season. It's always the season after."

"He'll come back next year 100 percent, the knee will feel good, he'll be fine. He's just frustrated. I said 'Stop saying stupid stuff. I was the only one allowed to say stupid stuff.' "

i like osi too. i just think that this year could be a unique opportunity for a fresh start. i think osi would fetch more than shockey. most of the trade talk around the jets S and osi swap included the S and picks going to the gmen so that's why i went with a 1st and 3rd (and no additional players). 1st and 4th, 1st and 5th i'd take too.

I'm not in favor of trading Osi--on the contrary, I think we'd be making a mistake in selling low. He is a warrior and will be playing with something to prove. What I meant to get across is that if we did trade him, I don't think there's any way we'd be getting a 1 and a 3.

Dansby
written by nycbigbluefan, February 09, 2010
I think that we should take a DT in the first round. I know what you're all thinking, but Brian Price out of UCLA will probably be available at pick 15 and the other LBers are not worth such a high pick. I think that at pick 46 (round 2) we could still get spikes (if we want him). If not, we could use another safety, Nate Allen from South Florida looks good. I think we should do what we can to sign Karlos Dansby, who had an off year last year in Arizona, with a coaching staff that doesn't understand defense. Dansby would bring some experience to the linebacking corps that would help to further develop the talent of some of our younger guys. I feel like we need to sure up the entire middle of our defense, from DT to MLB to SS and FS. In some ways I want an elite young DT even more than an elite young MLB. Our biggest strength on D is the defensive end position. The lack of push up the middle, really hurt that unit this year, and I feel like Jerry Reese should do whatever possible to put them in a position to be successful. A good MLB like Dansby who has experience and a young strong player like Brian Price at DT would really help us out. Also with Jay Alford coming back, if we got those two guys, we could see the middle of our D become a massive strength.
clarification
written by nycbigbluefan, February 09, 2010
When I say other MLBers will not be worth it at pick 15, I am assuming that Rolando McClain will be picked up before we get a chance at him. There are a couple teams ahead of us who could also really use some help up the middle, namely Cleveland.
Unknown factor
written by nycbigbluefan, February 09, 2010
During training camp last year, the D was way ahead of the O, then Kenny Phillips, antonio pierce and Jay Alford (Who I believe would have been a starter by season's end) went down. We need an experienced QB of the defense if we want to win now. Developing a prospect (especially a junior like McClain) in our 4-3 system, would take too long to see him make an impact. I think we're better off going with a veteran at MLB for next year, and picking up a young guy to take over when his contract ends, I really love Daryl Washington (who we could probably get in round 3).

If Dansby were signed by the Giants, would he be able to play MLB? I know he plays ILB in the cardinals 3-4 system.

Great read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on that. And he in fact bought me lunch because I found it for him.... smile.. So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch! But yeah Thank you for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and enjoy learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog!
