Toomer Talk
Written by Motown Blue

Amani Toomer had some pretty eye-opening comments about all things Giant.

Toomer commented on his first trip to the SB and how it was the worst experience he had in all of sports.  He basically slammed Fassel for how poorly prepared and not focused they were for the game.  The defense came to Fassel the night before the game and lamented that they were the reason why they got to this point and that they should be announced before the game over the offense.  That symbolized "the lack of focus going into that game."

He remembers how the offense was so pissed off the night before the game over this issue.  His memories of the Fassel years was how the offense and the defense had the biggest rivalries between each other.  "That was the underlying theme in the Fassel era."  There was so much animosity between the offense and defense and the biggest rivalries.

Great insight on their motivation and revenge factors going into the 2007 campaign.  "All we wanted to do was win." Gives a lot of credit to Coughlin for emphasizing how important this moment was going to be in history, that it was an opportunity to make your mark.

On Warner: "Not my favorite QB" because we only had 9 games together, but he was great because he took the time to communicate with his receivers, made sure you knew what he was thinking.  The locker room was split on Manning and Warner midway thru the 2004 season when Warner was pulled.  Considers Warner a Hall of Famer, took two organizations to the Super Bowl.

On Kerry Collins: "My favorite.  He got me the ball the most!"

On Super Bowl XLIV: The Saints have an advantage because their offense is more balanced.

Thanks Motown. Amazing just how frank this player was about SB XXXV. Did anyone hear anything like this before this interview? Benigno and Roberts sure didn't.

Just listened to the interview w/ Amani. It is very rare indeed for a player ( current or former ) to slam teammates or a coach like that. I did remember that Accorsi was peeved about that Super Bowl. Lo & behold, I found an article where they talked about the turning point of that game. We all remember, Armsteads's INT that was nullified by Keith Hamilton's "phantom" hold that forever changed the game. The end of the article refers to Accorsi's disappointment with the coaching staff.

Wow. This is from Mitch's story he linked to.

Accorsi, even in retirement, remains troubled by the lost opportunity.

''I never felt we had the intensity for that Super Bowl game; I always thought we were too happy after the 41-0 Vikings win,'' he said.

''I know the players played hard, but I never felt good about our preparation. It was too light-hearted for me.

''When you're involved in this game, there's one thing that becomes clear: you play for the ultimate goal, and the ultimate goal is not the N.F.C. championship game.''

I do remember John Madden on WFAN the week before the game said it was going to be a blow out. He figure which ever team got ahead first would win easy. He said with those 2 defenses, the O that was down would have to take chances. He was 100% right.

What made a difference was Toomer and Strahan talking to other players on the 2007 team going into XLII, reminding them of the hell of losing a SB game. I am convinced that that was a big factor in why this team prevailed. It was schooled WELL in understanding the stakes, that you cannot just be happy to be there. http://www.ultimatenyg.com/200...aways.html
Wishful Thinking

I wish they had asked him about how much of an impact "spags" had on that team. I can't believe they didn't ask him about the way his Giant career ended. Amani may be talking now but,to the best of my knowledge he was a very classy guy and one of our best receivers ever. I wonder how he felt about how the Giants treated him in the end.

From the book The GM, Accorsi is on record stating Collins is fragile. Collins was looking at Ravens instead of Giants receivers. His performance sealed his fate. Accorsi knew he could not win a championship with Collins.

Great job Mo!
