Giant happenings

I am more than a little pissed. I spent an hour or more writing a piece and when I tried to post it,it said "database error". The whole thing is gone. It's late but I will try again. The Giants got their backup for Eli today and it went well. They signed Jim Sorgi, who backed up Peyton for six years.

David Carr signed with the 49er's to keep his starting dream alive. David is no longer a starter, but Singletary needed someone to put into a very shaky situation in San Francisco. David gave us two good years and, like Warner, he wanted to start. Sorgi signed a one year deal and I think the Giants got the best man available. There are some things that Sorgi brings that Carr couldn't give us. Sorgi knows the league and learned from the best there is. He accepts his role and will be a big positive for Eli. He brings a piece of Peyton to N.Y. and although he hardly played in Indy, when he did he played very well. He brings good chemistry to a team that needs it. There was a question about his shoulder but he is throwing well and passed his physical. I like the move. The rumor was Coughlin wanted Mark Brunell in another attempt to resurrect his days in Jacksonville. Sorgi is the best guy available.

Fred Robbins is gone. He has joined "Spags" in St. Louis and I have nothing but praise for the big guy. I wonder what is on "Spags" mind. Robbins played well for us and made some memorable plays. He is aging and more injury prone so it was his time. Salute Fred Robbins. You are a Giant forever. I must add that the move makes me feel even more confident that "Blue" will go high for a defensive lineman. They needed to do it even if Robbins stayed but this move makes it a no brainer. There is depth out there in the draft and if we don't get McClain and Reese feels Kindle isn't the answer then Price or another quality guy will be available. There is that 320 lb. guy from Tennessee who, if motivated, is an impact player. His tendency to take a play off now and then is the only rap some have. A big guy in the middle is paramount to a quality defense. He is a space eater and can make a huge difference against the run and on the pass rush. Price is not nearly as big, but he is very active and gets penetration all the time. He is about 295lbs and very agile. I like him.

I do not agree with those who think we should go high for another DB. I believe we have good people and with the addition of Rolle we have a leader and a guy who knows the league, can play safety or corner and is an all pro. I think that Phillips will play. Every time that Rolle does an interview he talks about "me and Kenny." He should know whether Phillips will play and his comments are telling. Some think that $37 million with $15 million guaranteed is a lot of dough. I think so too but Dansby got $43 million and $20 million guaranteed and Dunta Robinson got big bucks here in Atlanta. I am sure the Giants inquired about Dunta and were outbid. Rolle is a very good player. It is an excellent move. Cromartie is a head case which we don't need. Rex Ryan has built a reputation of handling guys like that but Tom doesn't. Cromartie, as talented as he, is was not the answer for us.

A number of people think this is a very deep draft. Jerry Reese has stood out as a master of defining talent. Who ever heard of Kevin Boss before we drafted him? The core of this team was drafted by Reese and he needs to do it again. I believe that the defensive line and next the offensive line need to be addressed this year. Linebacker of course is the #1 priority. There are so many offensive linemen who were no name in college that it is amazing. Look at Green Bay, New England and Indy to name just a few.  For every monster from Okla State and Long from Michigan there is someone you never heard of. They are out there but they aren't in the headlines all the time and play one of the least glorious positions, so we don't know them. This is where a scout makes his bones. This year some are going at or near the top. There are others. Pouncey is interesting and you all know about the top names but trust me, there are more excellent players and we need some.

thanks peter for the tribute to fred robbins...best wishes to him..carr gave us a great comfort level for two years..i have no faith that sorgi can step in and do what carr could do, but it is not surprising as the choices are few i guess..we were very lucky to have carr for two years...good luck to him too...did you guys see the NFL salaries in the USA Today yesterday? I hope Canty earns a bit more of his this year...hopefully we are not done in free agency but if we don't bring in a LB obviously our flexibility is limited in the early rounds...urgent need there for at least one and preferably two high draft picks at that position...

We can't make everyone happy, Falconer. Tomorrow we'll have a post on how we are going to analyze the Draft so that not only will the ratings be objective and quantifiable, but also the raters themselves can be judged. We strive to be held accountable for what we say. We are on record every day of the year. Pete and Wonder will be compiling information on the upcoming draft and their opinions will be graded in due time to demonstrate (or not demonstrate) the value they bring. I do not know who else is going to verify out there. If they have, I'd certainly like to see their track record and read them.

Mayor- my apologies for losing your comment. That post will be going up tomorrow.

Impact
written by JoeMorrison'sCorner, March 10, 2010
That's all I want from the draft - Impact. Players who in year one or year two the latest will make an Impact. Not special teamers, not guys who push other guys. But players who make an impact regardless of the positions they play. That's what I want from this draft or any draft. Impact.
Best available talent...
written by Bukka, March 10, 2010
The Giants are picking high enough that the first and second round picks will very likely be "impact" players. The best way to be sure is to draft the best available player, regardless of position. Obviously, the greatest needs are on the defensive side, so they shouldn't take a receiver, but as long as the Giants can sign a starter at linebacker in free agency, they will allow themselves to pick the best available. I'd be happy with a number of guys at 15, including a d-back. Every position on the defense was exposed for lack of depth last season. I think that Reese and company have proven themselves as great (not good) evaluators, so I trust their judgement (much more than my own!) I love certain players, but what do I know compared to guys who get paid to make the tough calls. Clearly, Mara has opened his wallet, so the big news for me is not necessarily who gets drafted, but who gets signed before the draft.

I still hope we sign Keith Bullock. Mount Cody dropped another 5 lbs since the combine and is down to 349 lbs. Sounds like a guy who gets it seeing as he dropped 21 lbs in a 5 weeks. Let's get a little Tide Crazy and go with McClain and Cody 1st and 2nd.

sect 122 would love to add javier arenas too in round 3, but we likely have other needs (safety being one) that would keep it from a tide clean sweep there....
robbins, carr,
written by xtian, March 10, 2010
good luck guys. i agree w/ not re-signing robbins, only cuz of age. would have loved to get carr back, but i totally understand him going to sf--hope he starts--he's definitely better than sorgi.

if ross and phillips are totally healed then we dont need a cb high, but i still say get another safety cuz any injury and there's a big drop.

i would say we need a mlb w/ 1st or 2nd round pick. dont be surprised if ol or dt is 1st round pick. also if mcclain isnt there a trade dont to low 20s to pick up extra 2-3-4 round could easily occur.

lately, i suggest writing your story in another program and then cut and paste to blog, or copy before adding, so you can repaste. i understand the problem as it's happened to me. :/
