Simms will be doing the Super Bowl XLIV color for CBS tonight.
Simms (and Nantz, as a broadcaster) gives us the best inside access of anyone for tonight’s game. He was at practice all week and got that rare access to the coaches that only the prime coverage gets.
The Vikings were so big up front and moved the Saints OL back. Brees should have many throwing lanes today because the Saints OL is not going to have the trouble today they had two weeks ago.
Freeney Freeney Freeney. This is going to favor the Saints because he cannot be 100%. Less than 100% Freeney means one less problem for the Saints.
Payton was NOT wary of the DeMarcus Ware impact after being hurt the previous week. Payton will not be making the same mistake, underestimating the potential ability of Freeny.
“I got smiles” intimating I was on the right track… yes, we should see the Colts rotate Mathis over the weaker Saints LT.
Simms expects blitz-happy Gregg Williams to ease off blitzing too much simply because a tall Peyton in the shotgun is hard to get to anyway.
Saints will not run it too much because they understand who they are, that the Saints best players are involved in the passing game.
Simms’ main point which he will make in the broadcast… If Brees has time to find his second receiver, he is going to get a lot of easy 8-10 yard passes, really giving the Saints an edge.
LANCE MOORE CAN REALLY RUN ROUTES. HE’S THE GUY. HE SETS UP THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM. SO MUCH FASTER AND QUICKER. LOOK FOR HIM TO BE A BIG FACTOR TODAY.
SAINTS ARE READY. Simms likes what he saw this week. Sean Payton has a tremendous presence. HE IS BILL PARCELLS. Sarcastic, gets on the players. These things give you hope this is going to be a tremendous game.
COLTS ARE READY. The team is a bunch of grinders. Colts practices are magnificent. Execution. Peyton Manning demands so much from the offense AND defense in practice.
Caldwell- you don’t have to sweat when you are prepared. Payton is not afraid to put it out there. You can never be afraid of going down in flames. The Saints will go for it and do something special.
Summary: Simms spelled it out there for us. The Saints are going to give the Colts a great game. Those who are cynical can simply take that as him promoting the game he is going to broadcast. But that is not who Simms is. And he certainly does not need to be promoting the game that everyone on ‘The NFL Now’ is going to be watching anyway. Maybe he does that on the CBS Morning Show, but not NFL Now. So that tack goes out the window. What Simms said, in between the lines, was that he expects the Saints to have a very good opportunity to be effective on offense (and possibly win) against the Colts. He spent about ~75% of the discussion on the Saints. He liked what he saw. He will never call a winner when he is covering that particular game, but in between the lines, if you are a Saints fan you have to like what you heard.
